How to Store Whole Onions

Fresh whole onions are a cooking staple in many households throughout the world. It can sometimes be a challenge to keep the onions fresh until needed. Follow the steps below to store whole onions for up to six months and maintain freshness.

Things You'll Need:

  • Fresh, dry onions
  • Used or new pantyhose
  1. Step 1

    Purchase your choice of whole, dry fresh onions at the market. Remove any shoots or dry, flaking skin and loose matter.

  2. Step 2

    Take a washed pair of used or new pantyhose and place the onions into the feet.

  3. Step 3

    Tie a knot in the pantyhose above each whole onion. Repeat this process until both legs are full or you have inserted all the onions.

  4. Step 4

    Hang the pantyhose in a cool, dry and dark place, such as a pantry, closet or cellar. When you need an onion, simply cut the hose right below the end knot.

Tips & Warnings
  • Yellow onions store best but white, purple and brown onions can also be stored using this method. Just plan to use them sooner.
  • It is best to store the onions at 40 to 45 degrees F. Don't whole store onions in the refrigerator because the moisture is bad for them.
  • Don't store potatoes near onions. The onions will absorb moisture from the potatoes.
