If you take your placenta home, a wonderful to thing to do with it is to plant a placenta tree to remember your baby's birth. A placenta tree is something that will be the same age as your baby, will shade your baby as your baby grows and give a permanent reminder of your baby's life on this earth.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Placenta
  • Shovel
  • Tree or bush
  1. Step 1

Decide whether to freeze the placenta until your baby is old enough to help pick a tree and plant it or whether to plant your placenta tree a few days after the birth.

  2. Step 2

Defrost your placenta if it's been frozen. Place it in your refrigerator or a cool oven for a few hours. Make sure it's in a deep container such as a large bowl or a baking tin since the placenta will be messy as it defrosts.

  3. Step 3

Buy the tree or bush of your choice making sure it will do well in your climate.

  4. Step 4

Dig the hole for the tree giving plenty of room for the root ball.

  5. Step 5

Place the placenta into the bottom of the hole and cover it with a few inches of dirt.

  6. Step 6

Plant your tree over the placenta and refill the hole with dirt.

  7. Step 7

Consider putting a small fence around the outside of the tree for a few weeks or even months if you have a dog. Dogs may dig up the placenta to eat it.

Tips & Warnings
  • Some experts recommend planting the placenta and then waiting a year or two before planting the tree over the placenta.

on 4/22/2009 We waited for my son Jaden to be able to pick out his own tree. He is 5. So even though we have had to thaw out the placenta we will be planting the Oak tonight. Happy Earth Day!

on 1/2/2009 We did this with my son Eden. The tree (magnolia) flourished and is a constant reminder of how lucky we are to have him with us. We just bought the Oak for our daughter Oakleigh, and will be planting it tomorrow. We also make steppingstones with handprints every year to go under the tree.
