How to Freeze a Placenta

If you want to keep or use your placenta after your birth to ingest it, make placenta prints or plant a tree over it, you will need to know how to freeze it. Since the placenta is an organ, like other animal organs, it will go bad if not frozen fairly soon after birth.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Container with a tight closure
  • Freezer
Step1
Place the placenta into a large plastic bag with a good closure or a large Tupperware container with a tight lid. The placenta is an organ and contains a great deal of blood. You will need a container that prevents any spillage of blood and gore if there's a power outage and your placenta defrosts without you being prepared.
Step2
Place the placenta into your freezer, making sure it's been completely sealed in whatever container you chose. It will freeze quickly.
Step3
Use it quickly. The placenta is an organ and has a similar texture to other animal flesh. If you plan on ingesting it, you will need to ingest it before it gets freezer burn or crystallizes. Use your own best judgment if it's been in freezer for a while; decide if you would eat meat that's been in your freezer for that long.

Tips & Warnings

  • Avoid putting it into a container with a plastic wrap or aluminum foil so the placenta can be preserved properly.
