1
Remain calm. Before reacting to your child's tantrum, take several deep breaths and count to 10. This will allow you a few moments to gather your composure instead of lashing out in anger.
-
2
Walk away. Sometimes it is best to leave a child to work through a tantrum by removing yourself from the situation. Some moms and dads refer to this as a "parent time-out" and walking away gives you the opportunity to calm down.

3
Stand firm and gain control of the situation. A child will throw a tantrum for many reasons one of them being to get what she wants whether it is a new toy, a piece of candy or a later bedtime. Instead of being argumentative or yelling, clarify your expectations in a calm voice.
-
4
Call for backup. If possible, enlist the help of someone else during a child's tantrum, whether it is a spouse, a family member or friend. Remaining calm is easier when another adult is around to help you with a difficult situation.
-
5
Find a distraction. Listen to music or find something else to keep you occupied while you wait for your child's tantrum to stop.
