How to Reduce Pet Shedding

Dogs that live indoors will shed constantly throughout the year, particularly during summer months. Cats and other pets like rabbits and guinea pigs are also shedders. These animals can also suffer from hair balls if you don't groom them regularly.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Step1
Brush dogs and cats regularly. Most dogs and cats benefit from a daily brushing. If that isn't possible, brush them at least several times per week.
Step2
Use an undercoat remover along with a brush designed for your pet's coat. Undercoat removers, which come in a variety of sizes, remove the downy undercoat that sheds when the weather warms.
Step3
Feed a quality pet food. Diets rich in nutrients will improve your pet's coat and its overall health.
Step4
Add a vitamin supplement like Linatone to your dog's food. Vitamin supplements improve coat and skin quality and will help to reduce shedding.
Step5
Moisten dry skin with an oatmeal bath. In the summer, bathe your dog once weekly or twice every month. In the winter, bathe as needed. Caution: overbathing in colder climates can cause dry skin.
Step6
Eliminate fleas and other skin irritants. A dog or cat that is constantly scratching from irritated skin will shed much more.
Step7
Visit your vet regularly. A poor coat may indicate a more serious problem. Regular check ups can spot problems before they worsen.
