Storm chasers are becoming more commonplace. But when it comes to the big storms such as a hurricane, a person has to be motivated and professional. Become a hurricane hunter--here's how to do it.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging
Step1
Learn all you can about hurricanes. Hurricanes are large, dangerous storms. Knowledge could be the key to survival in such a large storm especially if you find yourself in the middle of its fury. Know the conditions form hurricanes. If you want to join a hurricane team, you're going to need to know your subject matter.
Step2
Get a degree in meteorology, oceanography or some other related earth science field that studies weather and weather patterns. Again, same reason--you'll need to know everything about what a hurricane is before you can join a group that hunts them down.
Step3
Join the United States Air Force Reserves and work to become part of the squadron that actually flies into hurricane areas to conduct research, take photos and measurements around hurricanes. Known simply as the Hurricane Hunters, the 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron has trained to deal with the impacts that a hurricane might have. They study hurricanes with modified C-130 airplane known as the WC-130.
Step4
Know the laws governing disasters and storms. In most places, it may be illegal to go into the storm area. Be aware of all laws governing disasters and places where the storm will land.
Step5
Find another hurricane hunter professional to work with, someone who is certified or regularly does hurricane or storm hunting. Scientists or engineers may be able to participate in the official Hurricane Hunters program.
Step6
Prepare for emergencies and always be prepared for the worse. Notify at least one family member of your intention. Take along supplies such as a first aid kit, extra water, nonperishable food supplies, emergency blankets and shelter equipment. Weather radios along with extra batteries and flares are also vital supplies to carry when you go hurricane hunting. And don't forget your video camera to document any storms you find.
