Having your ring drop in the toilet is a stressful situation. One wrong move and the ring could be gone forever. It doesn't matter how clean the toilet is, you still need to take proper precautions rescuing a ring from the toilet.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Tell everyone in the house what has happened and keep them from using or flushing the toilet. You don't need a mess getting in the way of getting your ring back. Tape a note on the toilet if you have to leave the bathroom.

  2. Step 2

Put on heavy-duty rubber gloves. This keeps the bacteria from getting into any cuts you may have on your hands. It also makes the situation a little less unpleasant.

  3. Step 3

Straighten out a wire coat hanger, leaving a small hook on the end. Insert the hanger into the toilet and wrap the hook around the ring. Slowly pull the ring up from the toilet, being careful not to let it fall off.

  4. Step 4

Clean the ring well. Sanitize it by soaking it in alcohol, and then clean it with jewelry cleaner. Toilets have millions of germs and bacteria and you don't want any of that left on the ring after you rescue it from the toilet.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't flush the toilet. Not only will you not get your ring back, flushing the toilet could cause plumbing or septic problems.
  • Never reach into the toilet without a glove on. It's both unsafe and unsanitary. If you don't have gloves, make sure your hand doesn't go near the water when you use the coat hanger.
