Buying a computer is a big purchase. You should do your research before buying an IBM computer. Take the time to evaluate what your needs are and compare those against the product offerings from IBM. Follow these simple steps to be on your way to owning an IBM computer.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy
Step1
Research IBM computers by visiting the IBM website and review websites, such as CNET. By researching, you can find the best computer for your needs and budget.
Step2
Determine the speed of processor (CPU) you need, depending on how you are going to be using your IBM computer. The mid-range speed for a processor is 2.8 to 3.2 GHz. If you are going to be doing a lot of data or graphical work, you should get a CPU on the faster end.
Step3
Decide the amount of memory (RAM) you will need for your computer. The more software you have on your computer, the greater amount of memory you will need to make sure that everything runs smoothly. It is recommended to have more than 1GB of RAM. Most IBM computers offer much more than that.
Step4
Think about what type and size of disk drive you want in your computer. Most IBM computers come with a SATA hard disk drive. Pick a hard drive that offers at least 80 GB.
Step5
Research video cards to see what type of graphical support you need. There are many choices of video cards. If graphics are very important to you, pick a card that supports DirectX9.
Step6
Pick out any peripherals and software that you might need to use with your IBM computer. Monitors come in either CRT or LCD type. CRT's are more bulky than the flat LCD's but will save you some money if you are on a tight budget. Buy the basic software that you need to get you started, knowing that you may need to purchase more later.
Step7
Purchase the IBM computer from your local computer or electronics store, directly from the IBM website or from an online computer store.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you don't get enough RAM when you first purchase your computer, you can buy additional RAM at a later date for your IBM computer.
