In Windows XP, it's possible to change the number of shortcuts that are listed on the Start Menu. Customize the Start Menu by deleting, adding and arrangeing shortcuts as you wish. Follow the easy steps to simplify Start Menu shortcuts.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Right-click on the "Start" button, and then click on "Properties." On the Start Menu tab, click "Customize."

  2. Step 2

Go to the "General" tab where you find choices including icon size and the number of displayed shortcuts. In "Programs," click the arrows up or down to set the number of shortcuts you desire. Click "OK."

  3. Step 3

Add a specific item to the Start menu by right clicking on the item. From the dropdown menu, click on "Pin to Start Menu."

  4. Step 4

Remove an item from the Start Menu by right clicking on the item, then click on "Unpin from Start Menu" on the dropdown menu.

  5. Step 5

Programs that you use regularly, or have used recently, are automatically added to the lower part of the Start list by Windows. To remove any of these shortcuts, right click on the item and click on "Remove from this list" on the dropdown menu.

  6. Step 6

Make changes in the Start Menu another way by clicking on "Start," then clicking on "Control Panel." Then click on "Taskbar" and "Start Menu Properties." This takes you to the Start Menu page. Click on "Customize" as above, then click "OK." You can also choose the Start Menu option that uses Menu Style from earlier Windows versions.
