One of the simplest, cheapest and easiest ways to keep your motorcycle engine running smoothly for years is to change the bike's oil on a regular basis. Doing the oil change yourself will save you some money and will give you a bit of working knowledge of the bike's parts and mechanisms. Follow these steps to change your motorcycle's engine oil.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Put the bike and your tools in a convenient place. Raise the bike onto its kickstand in a clear area that can get a little dirty. Gather your new oil, tools, rags and drain pan in one place so you don't have to run to get a tool in the middle of the oil change.

  2. Step 2

Find the drain plug and filler cap. Before you begin to work, make sure the engine is not hot, though it should be slightly warm. Remove the filler cap so that the oil settles to the bottom of the can and can be properly drained.

  3. Step 3

Place your drain pan underneath the bike's drain plug. You can use a flat piece of metal, or even a piece of cardboard, to channel the oil into the drain pan.

  4. Step 4

Use a socket wrench to open the drain plug. Open the plug slowly so any built-up pressure can diffuse. Keep an eye on the oil's flow so you can catch as much of it as possible with the drain pan.

  5. Step 5

Change the oil filter. While this is not strictly necessary, it's a good idea to take the time to change the bike's oil filter. Locate the oil filter using the motorcycle's manual and replace it with a new one.

  6. Step 6

Replace the drain plug and refill the oil. Make sure the drain plug is securely fastened and then pour fresh oil into the tank, using the amount of oil that is specified by the bike's manual.
