How to Change Colors Within a Crochet Row

When crocheting, you get best results if you join yarn or change yarn color at the end of a row. However, if you must change the yarn within a row because your yarn has run out, or because a pattern design requires a new color, you can still add the new yarn inconspicuously.

Instructions

1. Tie the new and old yarns together in the back of the fabric. Leave an end of at least 4 inches of the old yarn. Then hide the end by working the next stitches over it. You can also weave ends in later by drawing them through several stitches in the row. This method is the simplest, but the following methods are also effective.

2. Try this method when doing single crochet by holding the end of the new yarn on the top of the row you are working on before the old yarn is finished, then work the stitches over it. To change colors, work the last stitch in the old color until two loops are left on the hook. Put the old color on top of the working row, then pick up the new color and finish the stitch. Keep on working with the new color, working the stitches over the end of the old color.

3. Change colors when using double crochet or other stitches by simply pulling the new yarn into the fabric ahead of your next stitch. Then pull the new yarn into the top loops of your last stitch and continue working with the new color. Leave ends of at least 4 inches of the old color and either work the remaining stitches in over them or weave them in later.
