How to Change a Mechanical Fuel Pump

If it is time to change your mechanical fuel pump, there is no need to call in a professional. If you have a little bit of mechanical ability and the right tools, you can do the job yourself and save some money. Just follow these easy steps.

Things You'll Need:

  • Socket wrench
  • Ratchet wrench with universal joints
  • Screwdriver
  • Pliers

    Remove the Old

  1. Step 1

    Disconnect the battery cables.

  2. Step 2

    Relieve any pressure in the fuel tank by removing the fuel cap.

  3. Step 3

    Unfasten the fuel lines from the pump. Be sure to wipe up any fuel that spills immediately.

  4. Step 4

    Remove the bolts that are holding the pump onto the mount and remove the fuel pump.

  5. Step 5

    Clean off any gasket residue that remains on the mating surface of the framework.

    Apply a layer of gasket sealer on both sides of the new gasket and put gasket over the bolts.

  8. Step 2

    Install the new mechanical fuel pump onto the engine. The rocker arm of the pump needs to be against the eccentric inside of the engine.

  9. Step 3

    Attach the fuel lines to the fuel pump. Reattach the lines to the carburetor. Use a wrench to make sure it is tight.

  10. Step 4

    Reconnect the battery ground cable.

  11. Step 5

    Start the vehicle and check for leaks.

Tips & Warnings
  • Inspect the rubber fuel lines for damage. Replace them if there are any cracks or they appear brittle.
  • It may be necessary to reposition the engine's pump stroke to take pressure off of the pump rod for ease of installing.
  • If you notice fuel leaking after you disconnect the fuel lines, then you should crimp or plug the fuel supply line.
  • Fuel is highly combustible. No smoking, open flames, or sparks around your work area while changing a mechanical fuel pump.
  • Clean up any fuel spills thoroughly and immediately.
