How to Care for Duvets

A duvet is a comforter with two layers of fabric that contain down or feathers as a filling. Duvets vary by the fill power, which is the measure of how well the duvet insulates, and by the stitching that keeps the fill in place. These suggestions help keep your duvet fresh and like new for years.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Fluff duvets daily. Give the duvet a good shake each morning when making up the bed to keep the fill from clumping or matting.
Step2
Secure the duvet inside a duvet cover to keep it from shifting. Sew two pieces of fabric tape inside each of the four corners of the duvet cover. Slide the duvet into the cover and tie each corner of the duvet to a corner of the cover to secure it.
Step3
Air duvets two or three times per year to keep them fresh. Fold the duvet over a clothesline in the sun and reverse halfway through the process.
Step4
Keep the duvet covered to avoid having to launder it often. Spot clean small stains with a mild solution of dishwashing soap. Push the fill out of the way to avoid getting it damp.
Step5
Launder the duvet when necessary in a large capacity washing machine. Use the gentle cycle and the "extra rinse" option if available. Limit the number of washings as down and feathers tend to dry out and lose their loft.
Step6
Store comforters in the off season in cotton or linen storage bags that allow the duvet to breathe. Avoid plastic storage bags that eliminate air flow and trap moisture.
