Step 1
Learn what to expect. For example, at every security checkpoint, you will be asked to remove your jackets, coats and, possibly, your shoes for scanning. Dress for comfort, but make sure that your jacket and shoes are easy to remove.
-
Step 2
Be careful when packing. Don't carry anything unusual in your bags. Make sure have no weapons of any kind, including that harmless Swiss knife, hidden in last year's winter coat. Pack in advance to ensure that you aren't overpacking your bags. Peculiar looking luggage can be a red flag to security personnel.
-
Step 3
Follow airline guidelines as to what liquids in what amounts you can take onto an airplane. You can't bring drinks through the checkpoints, and you must carry any liquid toiletries in a clear, resealable one-quart bag. You can take on only 24 ounces total with no more than three ounces in any one bottle.
-
Step 4
Avoid wrapped gifts. Bring any gifts in your luggage or as an unwrapped, carry-on item. Make arrangements to wrap these once you arrive. Keep any unpacked items clearly visible and able to be scanned when you get to the airport.
-
Step 5
Arrive early. Allot enough time (about an hour or more before your departure) to get through security. Even if you are stuck in the terminal reading a book before you board the plane, you are better off than missing your flight because of security delays.
