How to Avoid Being a Fashion Victim

There's a fine line between being a fashionista and a fashion victim. You know you've crossed it if you don't have a single classic wardrobe item in your closet, can't figure out what to wear without consulting the Style Network. Here's how to assert your own sense of style.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Buy what's in style, but make sure you like it. You have an opinion, assert it. Just because your favorite celebrity loves low-cut jeans doesn't mean you do. Skip those muffin top jeans and fill in the gaps in your wardrobe with trends you do appreciate.
Step2
Consider how you look in the latest fashion trends. Waif-like models can wear just about anything and look fabulous; this is one of the perks of being built like a clothes hanger. Try on the newest look and make sure it's flattering on you before adding it to your collection.
Step3
Mix trends with classic pieces that never go out of style, like plain white shirts, fitted tees, blazers, the little black dress and diamonds. A good rule of thumb is no more than two trendy pieces per ensemble.
Step4
Keep your trendy pieces consistent, from the same style movement. No satin ballet flats with baggy cargo paints, or vintage tees with 80s black stretch pants under a mini. Stick with one decade per ensemble. If you've got on a hippie peasant blouse, don't pair it with 40s-inspired peep-toe heels.
Step5
Look in the mirror before you leave the house. Honestly assess what kind of impression you're making. The only thing worse than appearing outdated or fashion-backwards is looking like you're trying too hard.

Tips & Warnings

  • Try to create a signature look, a consistent style that people associate with you. You might be flowy and romantic, tailored and crisp or elegantly sexy. But not all three together. Try to use clothing to suggest your identity.
