How to Grow Contorted Filbert

The contorted filbert (Corylus avellana), also known as "Harry Lauder's walking stick," is an unusual deciduous shrub that makes an ideal specimen plant in the garden. As its name implies, the weeping branches twist and spiral to form an unusual shape. Even the green leaves of this shrub are contorted. In winter, golden-yellow catkins hang on the gnarled branches to make this an eye-catching shrub. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Select a planting site. The contorted filbert can be successfully grown in hardiness zones 4 through 8. It adapts well to full sun or partial shade locations. Soil should be moist and well-drained. Choose a location where the shrub can be seen, such as near a patio or window.

    • 2

Prepare the shrub. Contorted filbert may be purchased containerized or balled-and-burlapped. Remove any wire or twine from the shrub and half of the burlap covering the root ball from balled specimens. Any plastic or synthetic materials should be completely removed. If planting is delayed after purchasing, keep the root ball well-watered.

    • 3

Dig the planting hole. Prepare the planting site by digging a hole 4 times the width of the root ball for both balled-and-burlapped or containerized specimens. The depth of the hole should equal the depth of the root ball so that the top is even with the surrounding ground.

    • 4

Position the shrub. Place the filbert in the planting hole, making sure it is straight. Add some soil to stabilize the shrub. Fill the planting hole with water and allow the root ball and surrounding soil to absorb. Backfill the remaining soil. Water again deeply.

    • 5

Mulch the planting site. Spread a layer of mulch 2- to 4-inches deep around the shrub and planting area. The mulch should be maintained to prevent the loss of moisture, keep the roots cool and prevent weeds.

Tips & Warnings

  • Take advantage of the contorted filbert's striking growth habit by lighting it. A spot-lighted contorted filbert covered with snow is an eye-catching specimen plant. Combine with ornamental grasses for additional interest.

  • At maturity, the contorted filbert is 8- to 10-feet high and equally as wide. It can be pruned into any shape or size.

  • Contorted filbert can grow sucker branches at the base of the shrub. You can prune them during the growing season to maintain the shrub's desired shape or allow them to grow.

  • Unfortunately, Japanese beetles are fond of the contorted filbert. Take preventative action with an insecticidal spray before the beetles emerge.
