Change the look of your car with a tinted window. A darkened window can soften the harshness of the sun's rays and also prevent prying eyes from seeing in. Window film is easier to apply and less expensive than a tinted window treated with chemicals. Use a shrinking technique to tint your car's window with these steps.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Heat gun
  • Gloves
  • Bar of soap
  • Clean towel
  • Knife or scissors
  • Film
  1. Step 1

Clean the window thoroughly with soap and water. Scrub off any insects or dirt.

  2. Step 2

Spray a clean towel with water until damp. Rub a piece of soap onto the towel and create a nice lather.

  3. Step 3

Wipe the towel across the window to leave a thin, soapy film.

  4. Step 4

Lay the film over the window and smooth out any wrinkles.

  5. Step 5

Trim off any excess film that is not directly over the window.

  6. Step 6

Apply heat to the film using a heat gun. Start in the middle of the window and work out. Keep the heat gun moving in a circular motion. Smooth out any wrinkles with gloved hands. Use downward strokes just below where the heat is applied.

  7. Step 7

Finish with the top and bottom edges of the window. Smooth any wrinkles and trim off any excess film.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't keep the heat gun in one place for long. It can melt rubber edges around windows.
  • Every state has specific laws on what car windows can be tinted. Review the laws in your state prior to tinting (see Resources below).
