Getting a jet ski ready to go the following summer is the most important part of winterizing this personal water craft. To insure the jet ski runs properly, check the fuel, oil and engine in the fall. Prepare the jet ski as soon as the weather warms.

From Quick Guide: Jet Skiing
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Drain the water from the jet ski right after it's taken out of the water for the final time. When on a trailer, the jet ski is usually tilted back. Run the engine several times for no more than 30 seconds each time. Tilt the handle-back and-forth while it's running to drain the water from the engine.

  2. Step 2

Use mild soap and water to scrub the exterior of the jet ski. Wash away all algae, water stains and grime from the sides, seat and back. Make sure there is no water left in the hull of the jet ski when cleaning. Use a normal wax on the exterior to give it an added protective coat and shine.

  3. Step 3

Fill the gas tank to the top before storing for the winter. Add stabilizer according to the directions on the bottle to keep the gas clean for the next season. Run the engine in 30-second intervals several times to get the stabilizer mixed through the fuel before storing.

  4. Step 4

Remove the air filter to allow easy access to the carburetor. Spray fogging oil in the carburetors and spark plug cylinders. Spray the oil while the engine is idling. Continue spraying until the engine stalls and replace the air filter.

  5. Step 5

Take out the spark plugs. Make sure the wires are grounded first. Spray fogging oil into each spark plug hole. Put a rag over each hole and push the start button to disperse the oil. The engine will not start because there aren't spark plugs in place. Replace the plugs and clean up any excess oil.

  6. Step 6

Remove the battery, negative connection first, followed by the positive connection. Store the battery in a warm, clean area.

  7. Step 7

Trailer tires can rot in winter months if they are stored on dirt or gravel. Cover them with plastic bags and put them on boards. To keep them from rotting, take them off the jet ski and prop the trailer on blocks.

  8. Step 8

Store the jet ski on the trailer with wheels off for best wheel maintenance. Place steel wool in the exhaust to prevent animals from getting in the engine. Cover and store the jet ski for the winter.

Tips & Warnings
  • Get the jet ski cleaned and ready for the summer when taking it out of the water for the winter. That way it will be ready to go first thing in the spring.
  • Coat metal surfaces such as latches and hooks with a multi-purpose lube.
  • The battery can be attached to a trickle charger for the winter. Check the battery water level monthly to insure proper moisture.
  • Read your owner's manual for specific winterization tips. The above tips are generalized for most jet ski brands.
  • Since it is full of fuel, store your jet ski away from anything hot or that might produce a flame.
  • Don't store the battery in your home. It gives off noxious fumes.
