Gateway has been a manufacturer of desktop and laptop computers for years. The company offers a variety of models at a wide range of prices. Follow these steps to buy a Gateway laptop.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Search online at websites like gateway.com or go to your favorite electronics retailer to compare Gateway computers. Some stores that sell Gateway computers online are Best Buy, Circuit City, CompUSA, Costco Wholesale, HSN, J&R, Micro Center, Nebraska Furniture Mart, Office Depot and Staples.

  2. Step 2

Call 1-866-380-7353 for special offers and to speak to a representative about the various models and ordering process. Specific models found only through Gateway include NX570S, NX570X, NX860S, C-140X, NX100X, NX860X, C-120X and NX860XL.

  3. Step 3

Compare screen width and portability. The NX860 models have 17-inch widescreen high definition screens and the MX8738 has a 17-inch widescreen Ultrabright screen. Gateway laptops vary in size and include 12.1-inch, 14.1-inch, 15.4-inch and 17.1-inch screens, and vary in weight from 5.2 to 7.37 lb.

  4. Step 4

Compare processors, RAM and hard drives for speed and storage. The NX860XL model, one of the top and most expensive Gateway has to offer, is equipped with a 2.00GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor, 2048MB 667-MHz DDR2 SDRAM and a 160-GB hard drive. The less expensive NX570X has a 1.73-GHz Intel Pentium Dual-Core Mobile Processor, 1024MB 667-MHz DDR2 SDRAM and an 80-GB hard drive.

  5. Step 5

Evaluate anything else you might want in a laptop, such as type of disc drive, graphics card, wireless network card or camera. Many Gateway laptops, such as the M6815, M6816 and M6817, have built-in 1.3 megapixel web cameras. The MT3421, MT3422, MT3423, NX860X and NX860XL are equipped with a NVIDIA GeForce video card.
