Dr. Joanne Cornwell is the innovator of the hair locking system, mainly for African-American hair, known as sisterlocks. Although not as thick as dreadlocks, they are easier and more versatile when it comes to styling. You can curl sisterlocks, but there is a specific technique needed to do so.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Solution for curl setting
  • Perm rods
  1. Step 1

Visit local hair care stores that cater to black hair care products. Purchase a solution for hair setting, particularly for sisterlocks.

  2. Step 2

Purchase perm rods, if you don't have any.

  3. Step 3

Take small sections of hair and lightly spray the locks with your purchased solution.

  4. Step 4

Choose your desired size perm rods, depending on the size of the desired curls. For tighter curls, choose smaller rods. For larger curls, choose larger rods.

  5. Step 5

Roll sectioned areas with perm rods. Secure the rods into place. When the solution is dry, unroll the perm rods, and enjoy your new look.

Tips & Warnings
  • For waves instead of curls, follow the above instructions, but braid the hair instead of rolling it.
  • Other than warm water, never use direct heat on your sisterlocks. This includes, but not limited to, hooded or bonnet dryers, blow dryers, flat irons, straightening combs and curling irons.
  • Do not use foam, wire or plastic rollers on Sisterlocks—they damage the hair.
