African-American hair is diversely textured hair. The strands vary from straight, wavy, and curly to tightly coiled. The latest style, sisterlocks, look similar to dreadlocks—except that they are not as thick. You can style sisterlocks with more versatility than dreadlocks.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Mix equal parts water and shampoo in a spray bottle.

  2. Step 2

Divide your hair in four to six equal sections.

  3. Step 3

Spray your scalp with the shampoo-water mixture until the scalp is saturated.

  4. Step 4

Clean your scalp. Concentrate on cleaning your scalp during the first shampooing. Rinse thoroughly.

  5. Step 5

Spray shampoo-water mixture on your hair, this time concentrating on the locks. Squeeze the lather down the length of your hair.

  6. Step 6

Rinse thoroughly, again squeezing water down the length of your locks until you remove all the shampoo.

Tips & Warnings
  • Lean your head over the kitchen sink while washing. You can also shampoo your sisterlocks in the shower.
  • Properly condition your locks after shampooing.
  • When you begin growing sisterlocks, have your locks tightened regularly.
  • Remove all debris from your locks.
