How to Find Smoking Workplaces

In the old days, having a cigar or cigarette in an office was not uncommon. These days, it's getting harder and harder to find a workplace that allows smoking anywhere, even beyond the doors of the building. Health statistics and insurance trends, in addition to social mores, are creating smokeless workplaces at a fast clip. But with a little effort, smokers can still find a niche in the work world.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate
Step1
Look in the Help Wanted ads. Look for anything that says "smokers welcome." Employers will sometimes add this to an ad if they are particularly catering to smokers in their office.
Step2
Look for "old-school" offices. The best chance of a smoking job is at an older office where the work is not highly modernized, for example, where file cabinets still take the place of computer workstations. Rustic buildings and informal atmospheres are some clues to a workplace that may be more lenient toward smoking.
Step3
Find small, non-corporate employers. As with many issues, these small businesses will be more likely to negotiate on workplace issues. Many corporate employers, on the other hand, have been banning smoking outright, and no one who you meet on the job will have the authority to change policy.
Step4
Ask at an interview. When you are finding out about the job, you have a good opportunity to sort out smoking issues. Diplomatically state your own habits and see how they can work with the habits or your co-workers. If a human resources person says there is no smoking, ask about a possible outdoor area where smoking could be allowed.
Step5
Work with supervisors on an existing job to create a smoking area. It must be away from buildings and preferably out of sight. If you explain the situation, and if there are enough smokers, a supervisor might be willing to help you create a smoking policy that satisfies smokers and non-smokers alike.
