Step 1
Consider buying organic eggs. Eggs cannot be labeled as organic unless the chickens were fed grain free from pesticides. In addition, the chickens shouldn't have been given hormones or antibiotics. This is important since pesticides are stored in the fats of chickens and may be passed through to the eggs.
-
Step 2
Think about buying free-range eggs--chickens have an indoor and an outdoor area, meaning they get exercise and can eat bugs and worms (their ideal diet).
-
Step 3
Find out what the chickens are eating. Many chickens receive flaxseed in their diet so the eggs have increased omega-3s. But feeding chickens seaweed or kelp is another way to give chickens omega-3s and it's healthier for the chickens.
-
Step 4
Purchase the eggs directly from the farmer, if possible. This way, you can speak to the farmer about the chicken's living conditions and feeding habits.
-
Step 5
Increase your budget. Unfortunately, the healthier an egg is for you and your family, the more expensive it will be.
