Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Pencil and paper
  • Calculator
  1. Step 1

Track the amount of attempted field goals and the amount of made field goals by a player. You can use a scrap piece of paper and a pencil to help keep track. Make two columns and just tally each attempt and each make. A field goal attempt is a shot at the basketball goal from anywhere on the court. A made field goal is a shot at the basketball goal that goes in the basket and is counted as points. The only type of shots that don't count toward field goals attempted and field goals made are free throws.

  2. Step 2

Total the complete amount of field goals attempted and field goals made. If you were keeping track on a piece of paper, transform your notes into actual numbers. Remember, even shots made from beyond the three-point line only count as one field goal attempted and one field goal made.

  3. Step 3

Divide field goals made by field goals attempted. You may need a calculator to complete this step. If you are using a calculator, type in the number of field goals made. Press divide. Then enter the number of field goals attempted, and press the equal button. The resulting number should be between zero and one.

  4. Step 4

Convert the resulting number into a percentage. Move the decimal point two places to the right to get an accurate field goal percentage. Typically in basketball, field goal percentages are rounded off to the nearest tenth of a percentage point. For example, if a player shoots 3-for-9 from the field, their field goal percentage is 33.3%.
