Depending on your beliefs, it can be difficult to find out that one of your friends is a lesbian. If you react badly when your friend comes out of the closet, you could lose her forever. As her friend you need to be supportive and accepting. Follow these steps to learn how to have a lesbian friend.

1. Understand that your friend trusts you enough to come out to you. It is very hard for lesbians to come out to their friends because they are afraid that they will lose them.
2. Accept that just because she is lesbian she is still the same girl you became friends with. Being lesbian doesn't change who she is as a person. You can still hang out and do everything you did before you knew she was a lesbian.
3. Help her by being a trustworthy friend. If she isn't ready to come out to other people, don't tell anybody else. She will tell them when she is ready.
4. Learn more about homosexuality. If you are uncomfortable with your friend's sexuality, gaining a bit of knowledge may help you be more understanding.
5. Support her in her decision to come out of the closet. Let her know that you are happy for her because she is discovering who she is as a person. Let her know that you will always be there for her if she ever needs someone to talk to.

Tips & Warnings

• If you can't accept that your friend is lesbian, be honest with her. It will be hard to have this kind of conversation with someone that you care about. However, in the long run it will hurt her less than if you just distance yourself from her with no explanation.
• Don't try to change your friend, as she is a lesbian and nothing can change that.
