Whether you're planning a quiet evening at home in front of the fire or a huge holiday get together with friends or family, a steaming cup of rum-spiced cider will be a huge success. Mix up a kid-friendly version for the younger set.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 4 broken cinnamon sticks
  • 1 tsp. allspice
  • 1 tsp. whole cloves
  • 7 cups apple juice
  • 1/3 cup firmly packed brown sugar
  • 8 oz. rum
  • 1 cup butter (2 sticks)

    Hot Rum Cider

  1. Step 1

Mix the apple cider, brown sugar, two cinnamon sticks, allspice and cloves in a large saucepan over medium-low heat.

  2. Step 2

Cover the saucepan loosely and bring the mixture slowly to a boil, stirring occasionally. If any apple scum forms on the surface, skim it off with a metal spoon.

  3. Step 3

While the mixture is heating, divide the rum among eight large mugs. Put about 1/2 tbsp. of butter and one cinnamon stick in each mug.

  4. Step 4

Strain the rum-spiced cider into the mugs and serve. Makes 8 servings.

  5. Crockpot Hot Rum Cider

  6. Step 1

Tie the cinnamon, allspice, and cloves together in a spice bag or a piece of cheesecloth.

  7. Step 2

Combine the spice bag with rum, apple juice and brown sugar in a crock pot.

  8. Step 3

Cover crock pot and cook on low heat for 3 to 4 hours.

  9. Step 4

Remove the spice bag and ladle the piced rum cider into cups with about 1/2 tsp. of butter on top of each serving. Makes approximately 8 cups.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make a kid-friendly rum spiced cider by omitting the rum, butter, and brown sugar.
  • For a special effect, sprinkle a little crushed butterscotch candy on each cup of hot rum spiced cider.
  • Give the hot rum spiced cider a rosy glow by adding about 1 cup of cranberry juice to the mixture.
  • For best results, use real butter.
