Gaillardias, commonly known as the blanket flower, are of the aster family. They are colorful plants with daisy-like flowers and serrated tips on the petals available in yellow, bronze and scarlet. Gaillardias come in annuals, which are easy to grow, as well as biennials and perennials. Blanket flower blooms from summer to early fall and will bloom the first year.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Plant by seed or propagate by division in the spring or fall. Gaillardias are easy to grow from seed and self-seeding. Some people save the seeds. Allow seed heads to completely dry prior to cutting off.

  2. Step 2

Choose a location with full sun. Gaillardias prefer hot weather.

  3. Step 3

Develop a well-drained and moist soil. Add compost to keep the plant cool in the summer. They don't mind poor soil so they are ideal for rock gardens.

  4. Step 4

Sow seed in early spring directly into the soil or start inside in trays. If propagating inside, lightly cover the seed and keep the temperature at 68 to 70 degrees. Transplant outdoors in spring when the seedlings are large enough to handle.

  5. Step 5

Thin plants to stand at least one foot apart. Gaillardias form clumps so they will fill in the space.

  6. Step 6

Provide light and even watering. Lighten up on watering in winter.

  7. Step 7

Deadhead flowers to increase blooming. Remove old foliage in winter.

Tips & Warnings
  • Gaillardias only needs moderate watering and feeding. They tolerate heat and dryness once established.
  • Blanket flower is hardy in USDA zones 4 through 10.
  • Gaillardias are low maintenance. No serious pests, diseases or pruning needed. Plants sometimes need staking in strong winds, as they grow up to 3 feet tall.
  • Some hybrid cultivars won't set true from seed and do better being propagated from root cuttings.
