Step 1
Plant by seed or propagate by division in the spring or fall. Gaillardias are easy to grow from seed and self-seeding. Some people save the seeds. Allow seed heads to completely dry prior to cutting off.
-
Step 2
Choose a location with full sun. Gaillardias prefer hot weather.
-
Step 3
Develop a well-drained and moist soil. Add compost to keep the plant cool in the summer. They don't mind poor soil so they are ideal for rock gardens.
-
Step 4
Sow seed in early spring directly into the soil or start inside in trays. If propagating inside, lightly cover the seed and keep the temperature at 68 to 70 degrees. Transplant outdoors in spring when the seedlings are large enough to handle.
-
Step 5
Thin plants to stand at least one foot apart. Gaillardias form clumps so they will fill in the space.
-
Step 6
Provide light and even watering. Lighten up on watering in winter.
-
Step 7
Deadhead flowers to increase blooming. Remove old foliage in winter.
