How to Experience Mennonite Life

Mennonites are a Christian faith group which was founded in the early 15th century. However, they are different from traditional Catholics since believe in the voluntary following of Christ, thus supporting adult baptisms in favor of those traditionally given at birth. In order to experience the Mennonite lifestyle first-hand, read the following hints to get started.

1. Ask a friend. If you know someone of Mennonite faith, let them know you're interested in learning more about their faith and lifestyle. Becoming involved in new social circles and church functions are much less intimidating if you have someone there to support you.
2. Visit a church. Don't let your lack of contacts hold you back. No matter where you're located, it is quite possible you can find one within a reasonable distance; especially if you live near the large Mennonite communities such as in Pennsylvania, Maryland or Ohio.
3. Find an outdoor market. Sometimes you can find the "plain people," an Amish-like sect with a simple preference in clothing and lifestyle, selling their goods and produce. Their famously shy demeanor may at first dissuade you although they are typically a friendly bunch.
4. Attend a workshop or retreat. This is a great place to meet contemporary Mennonites and explore their teachings via insight and dialogue. In some cases, schools may even offer these if there is a large Mennonite community nearby.
5. Subscribe to a magazine. There are many available, including some which place particular emphasis on Mennonite women. However you can find others that are geared toward the general population and discuss such topics as local and worldwide relief efforts; spiritual guidance and scholarship information.
