How to Use a Static Control Wrist Strap

A static control wrist strap is a very important tool for a computer repair person to have. When a technician works on the inside of a computer there is a high risk for static electricity to damage the mother board. A Static Control Wrist Strap is used by the computer technicians to prevent static electricity. The Static Control Wrist strap is easy to use.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Unplug the computer. This ensures that you will not be electrocuted. Many computers still allow current to flow through the computer even when turned off if it's still plugged into an outlet.

  2. Step 2

    Take the cover off the top of the computer. This allows you to see inside the computer so you can upgrade or fix it.

  3. Step 3

    Put the static control strap around your wrist. This will ensure that you will be properly grounded.

  4. Step 4

    Connect the ground wire to the metal part of the computer case so that no static electricity will be allowed in the computer.

Tips & Warnings
  • Unplug the computer before working on it. Newer computers have a constant supply of current to the system board even when it is turned off.
  • Static electricity is always present even though you can't see it. Static electricity is generated by our bodies.
  • Make sure that your computer repair kit contains a static control wrist strap. Never attempt to fix a computer without one.
  • Always ground yourself before working on a computer, because static electricity can damage the components of your computer if you fix or upgrade your computer.
