How to Breed Oxen

Oxen are castrated bull cows. A castrated bull is already out of the picture when selecting which of the animals you're going to breed. So, to learn how to breed oxen, you want to start by studying about how to breed cows. Create a cow with the desired traits, then castrate them at the right time to become oxen.

      Take a genetics course. Get a degree in genetics to gain a deeper understanding in breeding an animal that has genetic traits you want it to have. Work on an oxen breeding farm after you get your degree.

      Purchase cow pairs with traits that you desire. Purchase more than one pair, as cows are herd animals. Maximize your options by purchasing a bull and several cows that have the desired traits.

      Pay attention to the calves that result. Find calf pairs that share the traits that you want to breed. Separate them from the rest of their siblings once they're weaned. Purchase additional cattle that have traits you want to breed.

      Wait for the next generation to breed, then measure the results. Repeat the prior steps until you get cow with the desired result. Castrate the males to create a cow that turns into an adult oxen.

  • Check your local, state and federal laws affecting how far you could go in breeding cattle. Look for techniques. Use genetic splicing if you have the equipment and are able to do artificial insemination.
