How to Breed Miniature Cattle

Techniques used to breed miniature cattle are closely held secrets. But the concepts behind breeding are the same; high school students taking biology classes learn the basics. Start early so that you can spend years finding your own special way to breed cattle.

Instructions

1. Do well in biology class, especially on the unit dealing with genetics. Work on a genetics major when you get into college. Get familiar with general genetic theory, and gain some experience, before you begin to breed miniature cattle.

2. Work on a farm where you can breed miniature cattle. Learn how to care for the cattle, manage the farm assets and equipment. Continue to read journals and newsletters dealing with animal breeding.

3. Work your way up to management, or start on your own. This gets you into position where you actually breed miniature cattle.

4. Study the market, and find out which kinds of miniature cattle sell. Find out if there's a demand for a specific type of cattle. Or if there's a miniature cattle niche waiting to be catered to. Use this information to determine what type of qualities of miniature cattle you'd like to breed.

5. Purchase a miniature cattle cow and a bull that have the desirable traits. Set them up to breed. Buy multiple couples depending on what traits you're looking for. Purchase bulls and cows that have traits you want to breed if you want to keep them together as a herd.

6. Look at the resulting miniature cattle calves. Ask yourself if they have the traits you were hoping to breed. Find which traits passed on, and which traits didn't pass on. Purchase more miniature cattle to breed with the calves.

7. Repeat the last two steps until you successfully breed miniature cattle with your desired traits.
