Step 1
Think safety first. A baling hook is a sharp object and can be dangerous if not properly handled. Never run with a baling hook in your hand. Be aware of your surroundings and keep your distance from others so you don't accidentally hit them with the sharp end. Store baling hooks where children can't reach them.
-
Step 2
Stand in front of the bale with the baling hook in your dominant hand. When you raise your arm in front of you, the hook should be pointing down toward the ground.
-
Step 3
Thrust the hook into the bale. Aim for a spot that's about two-thirds of the way down the length of the bale from you. Width-wise, the hook shouldn't go in too far to the left or right of center; that would make the hook's position unstable. If a hook isn't placed securely, it could slip out and hurt you when you try to lift the bale.
-
Step 4
Use your other hand to grab onto the bale. Most small bales have twine or some type of baling wire around them and these provide a good handhold.
-
Step 5
Lift the bale with both the hook and your other hand. Use your body to steady to the bale--you can rest part of it against your side or stomach as you move it.
-
Step 6
Place the bale in the desired spot. Remove the baling hook carefully and move on to the next bale.
