If you are a fan or student of film and television, then you should visit the Museum of Moving Image in Astoria, New York. The museum collects and preserves any type of moving image artifact. The museum is located on the former site of the Astoria Studio lot. This facility was the largest production house on the East Coast for Paramount Pictures.

Step1
Visit the galleries of the museum Wednesday through Sunday. On Friday, the museum has extended hours and does not charge admission after 4 p.m.
Step2
Check the screening schedule of the museum. Screenings are held on Friday, Saturday and Sunday each week. The museum offers a listing of the screenings offered as well as a synopsis of each film online.
Step3
Enjoy the film memorabilia. One of the biggest appeals of the Museum of Moving Image is the large collection of items from famous movies. Popular items include the chariot driven by Charlton Heston in "Ben Hur" and a character puppet of Yoda from "The Empire Strikes Back."
Step4
Learn about the process of film making with ongoing behind the scenes exhibitions. You get to see all of the equipment used in production as well as the techniques used to capture images on film.
Step5
Bring along some money for the museum shop. There are DVDs on sale, posters, children's items, souvenirs, books and much more.

Tips & Warnings

  • Unless otherwise noted by the museum, screenings are free with paid admission to the museum.
  • There is a café on the grounds of the Museum of Moving Image. They serve snacks, sandwiches and beverages.
