How to Visit the National Museum for African Art

The National Museum of African Art is part of the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C. It showcases numerous exhibits of African art along with programs designed to teach visitors about the importance of African artwork to our culture. The museum is opened daily and only closes on Christmas.

Step1
Find the museum in the National Mall between the Smithsonian's Arts & Industries Building and the Sackler Gallery of Art. Due to the busy location, it is recommended that you take public transportation to the museum.
Step2
Explore the museum's vast collections. You'll find displays of African currencies, a fertility display and a collection of imagery that typically is depicted in African art. Many of the pieces are centuries old artwork.
Step3
Look through the Eliot Elisofon Photographic Archives. This part of the museum houses thousands of photographs that document the history of African people from over a hundred years ago to present day.
Step4
Check the museum's calendar to see what upcoming events you wish to attend. There are guided museum tours available, as well as traveling exhibitions that are on display for a limited time.
Step5
Purchase a museum themed item from the on-site store. All the items in the store are inspired by African artwork.

Tips & Warnings

  • There is a cafĂ© located within the National Museum of African Art. However, there are numerous area restaurants in the National Mall area of the city.
  • The Smithsonian museums do not charge an admission fee to gain entry. Specialty programs may require a minimal donation.
