Step 1
Start your day with a glass of water, and drink a glass with every meal. Even though most people don't think of water as a morning beverage, it will refresh you and wake you up, and meal times are the perfect time for a glass of water, even if you're drinking another beverage as well.
-
Step 2
Carry a bottle with you to be refilled throughout the day, and drink from it at work, in transit and when you take breaks. Make a note of how many times you refill it.
-
Step 3
Keep purified, cold water on hand at home to drink when you are relaxing and doing housework. Water that is filtered tastes better, and you can freeze lemon slices to use in place of ice cubes for extra flavor.
-
Step 4
Stay hydrated before, during and after exercise or activity. Even if you're just going for a walk, drink a glass before and after you go, take a bottle with you, and make sure you drink all of it before you return.
-
Step 5
Add glasses of water into your daily routine at key habitual points. For example, drink a glass of water after brushing your teeth or walking your dog. You can fit a glass of water in after anything you do on a daily basis to make it part of your routine.
-
Step 6
Include other beverages in your assessment of what is water. Other beverages can help you reach your daily goal of water consumption-tea, lemonade, powdered drink mixes that go in water, and milk are all water-based and will hydrate you. Juice also has water in it, but you can get even more water by drinking a glass of half juice and half water.
-
Step 7
Eat foods that are high in water. Melons, lettuce, tomato, celery, and many other fruits and vegetables consist mostly of water. About 20% of the average person's daily water intake comes from foods, so look for foods that are juicy.
-
Step 8
Whenever you get hungry for junk food, drink a glass of water first. You'll get more water and curb your appetite.
-
Step 9
When you are out with friends and people are drinking alcoholic beverages, drink at least as much water as you do beer or wine.

on 7/3/2008 Great article. I'd like to add one small trick i use with my clients when trying to get them to drink more water. I ask them to stick 8 post it notes / stickies around their computer or fridge door and everytime they have a glass of water to tear one down and it really helps them aim to have no stickies up each day. Simple but it seems to work.
