Step 1
Read books or websites about perimenopause to see if you are experiencing symptoms and if progesterone cream is right for you. Although progesterone cream is available without a prescription, talk to your doctor about using it.
-
Step 2
Purchase progesterone cream at your local health food store or online. Make sure it contains only natural ingredients, no synthetic progesterone.
-
Step 3
Notice which potency of progesterone cream you are buying, or how many milligrams of progesterone there is per ounce of cream. Some creams contain wild yam, ginseng or other helpful herbs which are listed in the ingredients.
-
Step 4
Apply the hormone cream using only 1/16 of a teaspoon twice a day. The directions will probably say to use 1/4 to 1/2 tsp. twice a day, but it's best to let your body adjust.
-
Step 5
Use the cream for one month and notice if there is change in spotting, heaviness of periods or other perimenopausal symptoms. If there's no improvement, increase the dosage to 1/4 tsp. twice a day.
-
Step 6
Increase dosage to 1/2 tsp. twice a day if you haven't noticed positive results after three months and wish to continue using it. Reevalute results in two months or consult your doctor.
