How to Attach a Dinghy to Transom Davits

Whether boating is an all-out pleasure or a money-sucking nightmare depends on how you react to the many needs a boat can create. A dinghy is a great accoutrement to any boat and can serve as a savior in a crisis as well as a fun diversion. You'll want to carry the dinghy when you go boating, and the transom is the most likely place on which to tie it.

Instructions

1. Unload the dinghy of any tools or engine parts before attaching it to the davits. The repair bill will be outrageous if it hits the transom or destroys any of the valuable cargo you might be storing in the little rubber boat.

2. Clean the dinghy before hoisting it up to the transom. It is much easier to wash when it is free than to try and pry it away from the transom later. It is also best to keep the transom clean where the dinghy lies for the same reason.

3. Clip the dinghy to the davits that are attached to the transom. Make sure the dinghy is strongly supported by either the lines holding the clips, or it is resting properly on the platform. A strong wind can lift a dinghy from its pad and pull the davits right out of the boat, leading, again, to major repairs.

4. Wrap another line around the dinghy for extra support, especially the aforementioned wind gusts. When it comes to boating and the costs of repairs, always expect the best and prepare for the worst. Keep lines handy for this purpose. Use the davits if you don't have any other mounts, just be sure to wrap the dinghy lengthwise to strengthen the hold.
