Whether you're seeking a hard-to-find size or a memento of your favorite tree, making your own crochet hook out of wood can be rewarding and functional. Once you gather some simple materials, you can get working.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • dowel rod or other piece of wood
  • ruler
  • carving or whittling knife
  • coarse sandpaper (40-60 grit)
  • fine sandpaper (150-180 grit)
  • stain or wood wax (optional)

Step1
Find a good piece of wood. Dowel rods are easy to use for beginners. You can also use small, dried out branches from a tree in your yard. Just make sure the wood fibers are straight and knot free.
Step2
Whittle your wood into a cylinder that is one size wider than the size of your finished hook. You can also use a coarse, 40-60 grit, sandpaper to complete this step.
Step3
Use a small hand saw or sharp whittling knife to make a slit in the wood where you want the hook to be. The inside of the hook should form about a 45-degree angle.
Step4
Shape the hook of your crochet needle. You can do this using coarse sandpaper or a whittling knife. The top part should form a dull point, and the bottom edge of the hook should also form a dull point.
Step5
Sand your wood down with coarse sandpaper so that it is the right diameter to make the size crochet hook you want.
Step6
Finish your crochet hook. Smooth out the wood fibers using a fine sandpaper, between 150 and 180 grit. Stain or wax the finished crochet hook.

Tips & Warnings

  • Most commercial crochet hooks are about seven inches long. Yours can be longer or shorter, depending on the effect you want.
