Find a good piece of wood. Dowel rods are easy to use for beginners. You can also use small, dried out branches from a tree in your yard. Just make sure the wood fibers are straight and knot free.
-
2
Whittle your wood into a cylinder that is one size wider than the size of your finished hook. You can also use a coarse, 40-60 grit, sandpaper to complete this step.
-
3
Use a small hand saw or sharp whittling knife to make a slit in the wood where you want the hook to be. The inside of the hook should form about a 45-degree angle.

4
Shape the hook of your crochet needle. You can do this using coarse sandpaper or a whittling knife. The top part should form a dull point, and the bottom edge of the hook should also form a dull point.
-
5
Sand your wood down with coarse sandpaper so that it is the right diameter to make the size crochet hook you want.
-
6
Finish your crochet hook. Smooth out the wood fibers using a fine sandpaper, between 150 and 180 grit. Stain or wax the finished crochet hook.
