Instructions
  1. Step 1

Look at categories. Select the ones you like most, such as country music or entertainment and gossip.

  2. Step 2

Read program guides. Satellite radio networks have program guides online and on printed cards. This helps you maneuver through the maze of hundreds of stations.

  3. Step 3

Listen to all the stations in your favorite categories. For instance, try out all the classical music stations, all the financial talk stations or all the oldies stations. Make a note of those you like best.

  4. Step 4

Use presets. Satellite radios allow you to preset favorites. Program preset buttons to your top choices in different categories.

  5. Step 5

Stay updated. Service providers change station numbers and programming with the seasons.

  6. Step 6

Try special events. Satellite radio offers concerts by big artists, special events and one-of-a-kind features. Stations promote these on the radio and online.

Tips & Warnings
  • You hear a song you haven't heard in years, then hear it six times in the next day. Some music stations have rotations that are changed at certain internals. Switch to something else, if necessary, then come back for a new rotation of music.
  • Don't forget sports play-by-play. This is a dying art in many local radio markets, but you can still get a Yankees game in Los Angeles by searching the program guide.
  • Subscribe the satellite radio newsletter. Get it by mail or email, and find out about special events and program changes.
