How to Buy Old Polaroid Cameras

Buying vintage Polaroid cameras is cheap and easy. Without any of the pretension of other antique collectibles, old Polaroid cameras remain true to the vision set forth by creator Dr. Edwin Land in 1948. Polaroid cameras both old and new are still affordable and easy for everyone to use, whether you're Ansel Adams or not.

1. Look for old Polaroid cameras online. You can easily find them on several websites where collectors are selling, or at various online auctions such as eBay.

2. Search yard sales and consignment stores for unwanted Polaroid cameras of yore.

3. Be price savvy. Although beloved by many, vintage Polaroid cameras are so readily available that they're pretty inexpensive. Most aren't worth more than $20. Some roll cameras can be pricier because Polaroid no longer makes roll cameras or film. Also, some SX-70 models can be more expensive due to Polaroid's decision to stop producing film for the SX-70s in 2006. The most expensive models are the 180s to 195s. These can run several hundred dollars.

4. Know the difference between roll film cameras and pack film cameras. If you plan on using the camera, a pack film camera is your best bet. Most models of the pack film camera still have film and flash bulbs available on the market today, either online, in camera shops or in your local drugstore.

5. Familiarize yourself with the styles of cameras. For example, the iZone produces tiny instant photographs with an adhesive backing. These small photos give very clear, precise images. The Land cameras, named for their creator Dr. Land, fold into themselves. These heavy metal cameras open up to reveal a camera lens that pops out.

6. Choose vintage Polaroid cameras with accessories intact. Cameras that come with the original bag or other items are a bit more valuable than others.
