If you want to try out Ubuntu Linux and Windows Vista but you want to keep the convenience of your Windows XP desktop then triple boot Windows XP, Vista and Ubuntu. You can have all three operating systems on one computer. Follow these instructions to learn how.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging
Step1
Install Windows Vista on your computer that currently has the Windows XP operating system. Put the software CD in the CD drive and it should load automatically. If it fails to do so then go to your "Start" menu and select "Run" then locate your CD drive and click on the .exe file.
Step2
Download Ubuntu Live from ubuntu.com and burn the ISO file to a CD. Boot the CD on your computer.
Step3
Go to "System," "Administration," and "Gnome Partition Editor." Add 2 partitions for Ubuntu. Create the first partition at 3GB with an EXT3 file system and the second partition should be 1GB with Linux Swap.
Step4
Follow the step-by-step directions of the graphic installer. This will help you to install Ubuntu correctly.
Step5
Run Automatix on your operating system in order to install applications of your choice. Because Ubuntu is free it only comes with the free applications. Go to "Applications," "Terminal" and then follow the instructions to run Automatix. Restart Ubuntu.
Step6
Look around your new operating system. Everything should work exactly as expected with a ton of new programs.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you're not satisfied with your new operating system and want to go back to your original XP program then insert your XP installation CD and select "Repair your XP Installation."
