Swapping or bartering items is an excellent way to save money and obtain new stuff. Many people attend swap meets or barter with friends, and some businesses allow you to trade in your items. Anything can be swapped from a haircut to a parcel of land.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Swap your services for those of another. Often your landlord will give you a break on your rent for replacing a faucet or shampooing the carpets. A neighbor or friend may fix your car in exchange for your working on their refrigerator.

  2. Step 2

Exchange clothing, books and toys with friends or at consignment shops. Many shops offer store credit or cash for your used items.

  3. Step 3

Look online for opportunities to swap items. Craigslist and Freecycle offer many opportunities for free stuff or trades in your area.

  4. Step 4

Attend swap meets. Often you can trade your used items with others or you can sell your stuff or buy other things cheap. Look in your local newspaper for locations of swap meets.

  5. Step 5

Arrange with your neighbor to cook extra each night for dinner and swap the leftovers. This gives you something new to eat without getting tired of your own leftovers.

  6. Step 6

Ask your Realtor about swapping land or homes. Often, owners are more than willing to make trades. Temporary home swaps could also be a great way cut costs on your vacations.

  7. Step 7

Consider offering your professional services in exchange for another's. For instance, if you're an accountant, offer to do someone's taxes in exchange for lawn care.
