The Mr. Olympia contest is the pinnacle of the professional bodybuilding circuit. It takes years of dedication to eating right and weightlifting to get to that level. Even entering the Mr. Olympia contest is a difficult feat; you must win one of several smaller competitions to be invited.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Start small. Enter local bodybuilding competitions and learn what's expected. Get familiar with the process before you attempt to attain the title of Mr. Olympia.

  2. Step 2

Join bodybuilding competitions sponsored by the International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness (IFBB). The top three winners in any of the smaller competitions win a spot in the next year's Mr. Olympia event.

  3. Step 3

Enter the Arnold Schwarzenegger Classic. If you finish in the top six at this competition, you can enter the Mr. Olympia competition.

  4. Step 4

Compete in the New York Men's Professional. The top five competitors from this event move on to compete at Mr. Olympia.

  5. Step 5

Win the Masters Professional World Championships. The top winner here is also asked to compete in Mr. Olympia.

  6. Step 6

Place in the top six at the previous year's Mr. Olympia. These six men are eligible to compete in the next Mr. Olympia competition.

  7. Step 7

Get invited. Each year the competition extends a special invitation to one man to compete at Mr. Olympia.

Tips & Warnings
  • Any previous Mr. Olympia winner is automatically eligible to compete in the contest. However, he may have to get special approval from the IFBB if more than five years have passed since he won.
  • The New York Men's Professional was previously known as the Night of the Champions.
