Step 1
Select a platform. Pick an issue close to your heart; one you will speak about and raise money for during your entire road to the Miss America Pageant.

Step 2
Prepare yourself in each of the categories. Miss America contestants compete in different categories to showcase their many talents. Prepare thoroughly and be ready for stiff competition at every turn.

Step 3
Expect a grueling schedule. You will have to compete in at least two pageants to get to the Miss America Pageant and the schedule is hectic. If you're lucky enough to make it, you'll have to travel to Atlantic City, New Jersey to compete. If you win the pageant, you'll spend the next year representing Miss America.

Step 4
Win preliminary city pageants. These pageants differ by state but all lead to the official state pageant. You must win at this level and move on to qualify for the Miss America Pageant.

Step 5
Win at the state level. Winners at the state level, Miss Kentucky for example, are eligible to compete in the Miss America Pageant.
