Hitchhiking is a cheap way to travel long and short distances. It used to be a common way to get from one place to another during the sixties. Hitchhiking looks a lot easier than it actually is in real life. If you decide to give it a try, be prepared to spend time waiting. Follow these steps to increase your chances of getting a ride.

From Quick Guide: Hitchhiking 101
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Make yourself look clean and presentable. The person who stops to pick you up is taking a risk, so presenting a positive image will increase your chances of getting a ride. Wear simple, clean clothes and ensure you have good hygiene.

  2. Step 2

Find the right location. It is best to hitchhike outside of a busy city. Standing near a highway is the best place to get a ride. Ensure you select a road that goes the same direction you want to go.

  3. Step 3

Hold a sign that clearly states where you want to go. You are more likely to attract a ride heading in your direction if you let the drivers know where you are going.

  4. Step 4

Stand on the side of the road facing oncoming traffic with your thumb out. Smile so that people know you are friendly. People are more likely to pick up a smiling hitchhiker than a person who looks grumpy or unapproachable.

  5. Step 5

Initiate a conversation with the person who picks you up. Make him feel comfortable with you. If the driver starts to feel uneasy, he may decide not to take you as far.

  6. Step 6

Repeat Steps two through Five until you get where you need to go.

Tips & Warnings
  • Hitchhiking is illegal in most states in the United States. Check the law in your state before you attempt to hitchhike.
  • Tell somebody you trust where you are going so she can report you missing if you don't arrive. Carry a cell phone if possible.
  • Hitchhiking is very dangerous. If possible, use a more conventional way to travel or hitchhike with a friend. Don't get into a vehicle if the driver's behavior makes you feel uncomfortable.
