Amsterdam is known for its gorgeous architecture, rich artistic history and cultural freedom. People travel to Amsterdam to relax, shop and enjoy the local attractions. There is a lot to see, and getting the most out of your weekend trip requires planning. Read on to learn how to spend a weekend in Amsterdam.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • A nice stack of Euros
  • Plenty of energy
Step1
Book your flight or train trip for a free weekend. If you have a presentation or events scheduled for the following Monday, choose another weekend.
Step2
Have breakfast. A good breakfast can give you plenty of energy for a day of biking around the city.
Step3
Rent a bike. One of the most unique features of Amsterdam, and indeed the Netherlands in general, is the number of people who travel by bicycle. In many areas bikes can outnumber cars. Bike rentals can save money on cab fare and spare you the hassle of waiting in traffic or taking crowded buses.
Step4
Find the new modern architecture, such as Renzo Piano's buildings, amidst Amsterdam's famous canal houses. Although Amsterdam's classical architecture is beautiful, take the opportunity to see the emerging modernist side of this historic city.
Step5
Visit the tower at Westerkerk, which is the highest tower in Amsterdam. It affords a beautiful view of the city.
Step6
Take a break at one of Amsterdam's infamous coffee shops for a break and perhaps an intoxicating treat.
Step7
Visit the famous Van Gogh Museum, featuring 200 paintings and 550 sketches by the artist. The museum is easy to navigate, and allows for a quick trip or a long viewing. The gift shop is also a notch above average, featuring very good quality prints of many of Van Gogh's best works.
Step8
Hit the Mansion, an upscale townhouse saloon, featuring an Asian diner and a dance floor with live DJs.
Step9
Take your pick from dozens of great museums. Think about what you would like to see most, don't rush it. Some fantastic options are the Film Museum, Rembrandt House Museum and the highly unique Erotic Museum, located in the heart of the red light district.

Tips & Warnings

  • Amsterdam's relaxed social atmosphere has helped it to become one of Europe's creative capitals.
  • Orangebike near Dam Square is one of the top bike rental services in Amsterdam.
  • The tower at Westerkerk is where the artist Rembrandt is buried.
