How to Work a Room
Social skills are never more important than when they relate to success in your work. No matter what your profession, some social skills are needed in order to find new clients or find a new job. Attending social events can be awkward, but not if you know what you are doing. Follow these steps to work a room.

1
Recognize your goal before attending the social function. This focus will help you to concentrate your energy in one direction and attract the experiences you need for success.
-
2
Work up an introduction before going to the social function and practice it in front of the mirror. This intro will help keep you from getting tongue-tied and increase your chances of reaching your goal.
-
-
3
Dress well. It is always better to overdress than underdress. Also, put your coat and bag down. Women can carry a purse if they must, but carrying a coat makes you look like you are shielding yourself or you are about to leave.
-
4
Move around the room. Don't get stuck talking to the same people.
-
5
Act like a host instead of a guest. Introduce yourself to others and introduce guests to other guests.
-
6
Ask people questions. People love to talk about themselves. Listen to them carefully in order to discover common goals and interests. Use these topics to keep your conversation going.
-
7
Thank the host before you leave. Leave a good impression so you will be invited again.

Tips & Warnings
Don't get stuck in a "rockpile." This is a group of guests huddled tightly together in one area of the room.
Don't ask your host heavy questions. Keep them light and upbeat.
