Whether you're an amateur who runs one mile a day or an advanced runner training for a marathon, there is a shoe out there to meet your specific needs. Learn what to look for when buying running shoes and you'll keep your feet happy and healthy for many miles to come.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Consider the shape of your feet. Whether you are flat-footed, neutral or have high arches, look for a running shoe that's right for your feet.

  2. Step 2

Think about where you run. Running every day on asphalt requires a shoe with more cushion. If you spend your time running on trails, you can buy a running shoe with less cushion.

  3. Step 3

Consider how long you run. If you run more than 30 minutes a day 3 times a week, buy a good quality shoe that's comfortable and fits your feet well. If you run any less than that amount, you can probably get away with a slightly worn pair that you already have.

  4. Step 4

Choose the correct shoe size. Shoe sizes often differ by manufacturer, so you may end up with a different size than you normally wear. Try on shoes before you buy. Carefully evaluate how the shoe feels to ensure the proper fit. Experts recommend getting a running shoe that is slightly larger than you regular shoe size because your foot is pushed forward as you run.

  5. Step 5

Buy comfort over style. Don't assume running shoes will get better once you're on a run. If they're not comfortable in the store look, for a new pair.

  6. Step 6

Take your time and try on many pairs to find the running shoes that are best for you. If you have questions, ask the salespeople for help. Some can tell what kind of shoes you need just by watching you jog through the store or looking at the wear pattern on your old shoes.

Tips & Warnings
  • People with flat, or pronated, feet need to buy straight or semi-curved shoes with a stiff inner sole to keep the foot from rolling in. People with high arched, or supinated, feet should buy semi-curved or curved shoes that are flexible. People with neutral feet should buy straight or semi-curved shoes. Although it is not necessary, people with neutral feet may need a stiff inner sole to keep the foot from rolling in.
  • Replace your running shoes every 400 to 500 miles, every six months or any time the soles are worn unevenly.
  • When you go shopping, take along your running socks to get an accurate fit.
