Inspired by the Tetris video game, this bookshelf design is a stackable, rearrangeable shelf that is made to fit in almost any space. A Tetris bookshelf does take time and some skill to create but the end result is an artistic set of bookshelves that makes for a good conversation piece.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 2 30-inch boards
  • 2 30-inch 1 by 8 boards
  • 2 40-inch 1 by 8 boards
  • 8 20-inch 1 by 8 boards
  • 18 10-inch 1 by 8 boards
  • Table saw
  • Miter saw
  • 220-grit sandpaper
  • Stain or vanish
  • Paintbrushes
  • Wood glue
  • 1 bag of 1-1/4-inch nails
  • Hammer or nail gun
  1. Step 1

Miter cut the ends of the boards so the corners fit together in a 90-degree corner.

  2. Step 2

Sand and stain the cut boards. Allow the pieces to dry before you continue with the bookshelf.

  3. Step 3

Form the Tetris square with four of the 20-inch boards. Place wood glue on each mitered end of each board. Match the mitered edges together to make a 90-degree angle. Drive three nails into one side of the mitered joint and two on the other side of the joint.

  4. Step 4

Make a rectangle using the same process as in Step 3. This time, use two 40-inch boards and two 10-inch boards. Wait for the glue to dry.

  5. Step 5

Create an "L" shaped Tetris piece out of a 30-inch board, two 20-inch boards and three 10-inch boards. First, attach a 10-inch board to the end of a 20-inch board. Attach a 30-inch board to the other end. Use the same process as in Steps 3 and 4 to secure the boards. Second, attach a 10-inch board to the end of the 30-inch board. It must point up toward the center of the "L." Attach the final 10-inch board to the end of the 10-inch board already in place. It needs to point toward the center as well. All of the joints must line up and create 90-degree angles. Third, connect the two center-facing 10-inch boards with a 20-inch board. This finishes the "L" shape.

  6. Step 6

Form a "T" piece from one 30-inch board and seven 10-inch boards. Use the same glue and nail process as in the other steps. First, attach a 10-inch board to both ends of the 30-inch board. Second, place a 10-inch board to each of the secured 10-inch boards. Be sure the corners make a 90-degree angle. The piece now looks like a rectangle with a gap in it. Third, make the bottom of the "T." Use two more 10-inch boards and create the leg of the "T." Attach the leg to the top piece already created. If not already done, secure a 10-inch board to the bottom of the leg to complete the "T."

  7. Step 7

Make an "S" or "Z" Tetris shape. Attach a 10-inch board to each end of a 20-inch board. One of the mitered edges needs to face inward and the other outward. Next, attach a 10-inch board to the end of one of the inward-facing mitered edge. This piece needs to be parallel with the 20-inch board and must point to the center of the piece. It needs to look like a rectangle with a hole in it. Now, attach a 10-inch board to the outward-facing mitered edge of the other 10-inch board. The corner needs to form a 90-degree angle and the board must point away from the piece. Attach 10-inch boards to the ends of the two 10-inch boards you last secured. These boards must point down and away from the 20-inch board. Complete the Tetris shape by connecting the 10-inch boards with a 20-inch board.

  8. Step 8

Stack the pieces together in any shape your heart desires. Fill the Tetris bookshelf with your favorite books or trinkets.
