Step 1
Make a base ring. Chain six and join with a slipstitch. Chain three, treble crochet two and cluster into the ring. Then chain two and treble crochet three with a cluster five times. Chain one, then half treble one into the top cluster to join the round with six clusters in total.

Step 2
Create the second round by chaining three and treble crochet two with a cluster into the previous half treble. Then treble three with a cluster, chain two and treble three with a cluster into the next space, repeating four times. Chain two, treble crochet three with a cluster into the last space, then chain one and make a half treble make a link to the first cluster. Close the round by working two clusters into each space, making twelve clusters.

Step 3
Crochet the third round by chaining three, treble crochet two with a cluster into the previous half treble, chain two and treble three with a cluster into the next step. Chain two and treble three with a cluster into the next space and repeat four times. Chain one and make a half treble making a link the first cluster and close the round by alternating two clusters then one cluster into the spaces, making eighteen clusters.

Step 4
Begin the fourth round. Chain three and treble crochet one in the previous half treble. Treble crochet three into the next space. Treble three, chain one treble three into the next space and repeat four times. Treble one into the next space and join the first chain three with a slipstitch.

Step 5
Start the fifth round by chaining one and double crochet one into each stitch all around and end the round by joining to the first double crochet with a slipstitch.

Step 6
Use a contrasting yarn color for the sixth round of the hat. Chain one and double crochet one into the same space. Work a single double crochet all around, but double crochet two into each corner chain. Join the round with a slipstitch into the first double crochet.

Step 1
Place the hexagons right sides out and join the six hex's to the central hex with a double crochet. Join down the sides of the hex's.

Step 2
Make the brim. Start at a join, slipstitch and double crochet into the same place, then work a single double crochet into each chain all around. Continue the double crochet until the brim measures two inches deep. Join with a slipstitch at the starting point.

Step 3
Finish by weaving in all the yarn ends. Press the hex hat lightly with a damp cloth and dry flat to help the shape settle.
